Wood Gloat
Have been experimenting with home spalting. The piece that I used was Avocado, it yielded quite a few blanks, 180 of them. from clean to slight dis-colorization, through to light to medium spalting, these can be stabilized with CA. The heavy spalted blanks would definitely need stabilizing. They are stacked at the moment and are air drying for future use, trade or fire starters whichever comes first Below is a sample of just some of them.

Hey Ian, yeah just waiting for them to air dry and they will be ready to use. The ones that need stabilizing i will pack in a box until I get gear to do it, I will drop you a PM when they are dry if you are interested. Some will be plain, some with slight figure and some like what you see here. Should get away with thin CA to firm up most of them. The ones that need stabilizing really need it bad lol.

Hey bdar
Great effort! Beautiful to see the experiment paid off.
Did you cover the timber in saw dust and left it in a cool damp place? or did you use the plastic bag trick?
You should try Silky Oak (Southern), they spalt up pretty nicely too.
Thanks for sharing

Great stuff bdar. When I was reading your first post I was thinking "how is this done?" and there it was, a lovely link. Think I'll give this a go. Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

I used the first method David, found some orange fungus on a some decaying tress when I went bush walking and brought home a bag full broke it up and put oit in the mix. My avocado had some growing on it when I uncovered it. I heard another method is to get yoghurt to go off in the fridge then paint pen blanks with it and then seal it in a plastic bag. Have a heap of silky oak, so might give that a try.
