Wood Pic Library
Hey Guys. Found this good little reference site for hundreds of varieties of wood. Hundreds of color swatches of just about every species. Good for us pen makers, as you can see just what the finished timber looks like with a coat of clear to bring out the grain. The pics take a minute or two to load, as there are so many.

Brilliant site Pariss. I was talking about doing a dictionary of terms for use on this forum but that one has it all - timber, tools, everything. Maybe the moderators can put the link to it on the tutorial page as it would be hard to beat that one.

Yes it is a brilliant web site, that is why it has been listed many many times, but usually on the Timber sub-forums

That's the problem with coming on to only one part of the forum Neil. I never look at anything other than pen turning.

We are all guilty of looking only at the sub-forums we interested in, but it is good to expand your knowledge, other sub-forums can open your mind to way to improve your pens. My casting of odds and ends comes from casting defects in bowls, which in turn came from a table I did.
Timber/Timber Milling can help with timbers and how to cut them for your pens. Bandsaw forum helps with cutting maintenance etc. Router forums introduce multisided pens more easily. This list goes on....

Agreed Neil. I read the forums in a RSS reader which feeds all the forum sections 30 at a time. This way everything that gets posted goes past my eyes and I pick and choose what interests me. I don't frequent one particular section at all.
Whilst I'm on the subject of RSS readers, I'm surprised there's no advertising within the RSS feed. Be a good opportunity for some enterprising business.-Scott

I just flicked through the list of forums on here and was amazed by the number. I will look about a bit more.
Now for someone who is almost computer illiterate, what is an RSS reader and where do you find it?

RSS (really simple syndication) is a way of reading the content of website without actually having to visit the website. Most websites provide a RSS address to read the articles on their website however some don't. I use Netnewswire for OS X (Apple) and there are many readers for Windows, some say FeedDemon is the best for Windows. The RSS address for the Woodwork Forums is:
Code:https://www.woodworkforums.com/external.php?type=RSS2
Hope this helps-Scott

Hmmmn. I have used various RSS feeds, and I really didn't like them much, Apple OS X iMac. You seem to get a bunch of stuff streaming down to your computer that your not really interested in. Maybe there is a way to filter all that stuff but why bother. I MUCH prefer to use the proper web site. Much more personal and enjoyable plus you help to support all the sponsors that make this incredible forum possible.

Okay, I thought it might have been some program on this site that allowed posts from a multitude of subforums. My education continues. Thanks for the information though.

Most feed readers include a whole heap of feeds in the download, just simply delete them. After that you subscribe to what you're interested in. I've attached a screenshot of my subscriptions (all woodwork related of course). It appeals to me because all my interests are combined into one program.
