    Default Woodchuck pro

To those who use the Woodchuck Pro turning tool

Can you give me a bit of advice please

How many acrylic pens can you turn on each side of a blade before it blunts and you have to rotate the blade to the next side?

Do you get better result on acrylic blanks from the R2 blade or the R4 blade?

I was turning a casted blank this afternoon and the R2 blade was cutting into the acrylic far too much and throwing bits of acrylic everywhere. I changed to an R4 blade and had better success, but maybe that was because the R4 was fresh and sharp.

However, when pushing the filings from the acrylic blanks off the end of the tool I found out very quickly that the R4 is much wider and cuts very quickly through your finger At least it was sharp and didn't hurt when it cut through my thumb. Adds a bit of colour to the blank too

Here is a pdf guide on the use of them hope it helps http://www.penblanks.ca/instructions...huckPenPro.pdf

To sharpen the tool remove from holder and lay flat on a diamond sharpening pad a move around ina circular motion do not use a grinding stone.

Length between sharpening depends on the material you a re cutting

    Default That Tool.

    Hi All,
Hope I don't ruffle to many Feathers here.
Well I'm Showing my Grandsons " How To Turn ", Not to Scrape as I believe that tool does.
They have been shown to Scrape the inside of a Pen Holder, a small Bowl, at this stage, but not with that Pro Turn Tool.

Yes, it does a good job on Acrylic, but I'm not sure how it tackles Knarley Old Wood, or isn't it made for that.

In that Demo, I wood have thought the Turner wood have had the Tool Rest quite a bit Closer, as you see the catch he got right at the Start, & maybe a touch higher than centre.

    Yes, Horses for Courses ???.
    Regards,
    issatree.

I am still on my first edge after 2 years, not a lot of use for me , I like it better on wood as it is a quite aggressive tool and wood is usually more forgiving than acrylics . It is a scraper to all intents and purposes ,but with a leading edge cut as well. I used my skew as a scraper for about 2 years till I got the hang of it as a skew , lol. Try not to get too much speed up as the heat is not good for acrylics ,the carbide doesn't get bothered at all. I find with wood sharp is best, acrylics a little bluntness helps it to stop biting in and gouging I find a good method of use is more like a parting tool EG plunge cut about an 1/8th of an inch to just above your bushes at each end , you can do that along the blank without too much stress ,then just clean up along the blank to the size you want ,its all a bit in the hand of the craftsmen ,find what works for you, I found a C3 works best for me lol cheers ~ John

I dont rotate my edge, if it doesnt seem to be cutting as well as it should, I just give it a bit of a rub along the top with a fine diamond lap.
Been on the same edge for over 12 months cutting all sorts of stuff.

Thanks all. I do like using the Woodchuck Pro and have been using it for some time but I was just trying to find out how long you thought one side of the blade would last and whether you prefer the R2 or R3 blades. I went to the Bunnings today and got a diamond lap sharpener. Will see how that goes.
