Ah. But how would it go with a Carpenter's pencil?
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Don't know that much about CNC machines, but I'm sure it could be programmed

yeah dead easy. it goes something like
    G00 x5.0 Z0 S1000 F0.3
    G01 Z25.0
    G00 Z0
    X2.0
    G01 Z15.0
    G00 Z0
    X1.0
    G01 X7.0
    G00 Z0,1
    X-0.5
    G01 X5.0 Z30.0
    G00 X100.0 Z100.0
    M30

Just off the top of my head. If you were a proper CNC coder you would use a canned profile cutting cycle to do this which I think is what they did but honestly for a bit of wood in one of those machines. Run at maximum RPM say 6000 or more for a small machine (small machines are faster after all who wants to run a 1.5m casting at 4 or 5 thousand RPM?) one cut instant pencil. Actually truth be told if you were doing that in a tool steel like 4140 you could go pretty much that fast with the carbide tools they are making now.

What I would like to see is a shot of a mill sharpening and customising an A2 Plane blade with a Cubic Boron Nitride tip. This stuff cuts Rc65 stuff such as High Speed Steel at 200 metres/minute. Imagine that no need for grinding just zap it off to a perfect edge no grinder required!

If you really want to see some stuff go to youtube and do a 5 axis CNC search. They have basically bolted lathes and mills onto the one platform to increase productivity and precision. The ones I love are called mill turn machines. Mazak makes one called the Integrex. Basically two lathes facing each other with a milling head in the middle. Turn one end then it does any milling like putting flats on whatever the second spindle comes out grabs the work drags out the required amount it's cut off then machining is done on the "back" face of the work! Finished part drops in a catcher. The really high end guys have robots to unload the catcher put it on a conveyor and it goes off to another robot that packs the part and loads it ready to go on a truck.

Oh and the machine is able to measure the job as it goes and make any adjustments as they are needed.

Can you believe that? The good thing about this is that you can walk out friday afternoon turn the lights off and just let the machine go on making money all weekend until you get back monday morning. That is beyond amazing.

Studley, some good info there, obviously you are right into that mind boggling stuff, maybe you could a tutorial outlining the pros and cons of some of thos wonderful machines, I think it would go beyond pens to general woodwork all round. Amos

I want one for the office, I'm willing to share. Do you think the school stationary budget will cover it?
