What ya can do with free stuff
Hey yall
I just started a new job/ a little hard but worth the mental peace \ the other day we were at a work site demoing the restroom for rebuilding and low and behold their was a corian countertop that we were going to throw away. My boss found out that I make things and joking around he asked if I could make something out of that. Welllllllllll yall know my answer. For being nice to the new kid I made him this pen, hope he likes it. Just wanted to share.
Who knows what I might get my hands on next maby some nice wood or something.
JudeI have done so much for so long with so little I can now do almost anything with nothing!

Hmmm... I don't mean to sound critical, but I think you assembled it upside down! Can you imagine how it'd look the other way around?
Good job with the Corian, it's a bit harder to turn than acrylics, quicker to melt. Pity you're on the other side of the big water, I'd love to see what you'd come up with if you were in the pen swap.

It's the plastic they use for imitation marble benchtops.
Corian is actually a brand-name, and there's a few slightly different materials from other manufacturers, but I (and most people I know) call all of 'em corian.

i wonder if they burn well with lots of toxic fumes?
The one thing about living in a cave is that it was pretty fireproof. Things have gone downhill since we left, except that the pens have gotten more interesting though can one hold them to write with?

Normally it's only 12 or 15mm or something. Unles I run out to the shed with calipers in hand, I can't say for sure. I'e seen thicker pieces, but they're unusual... and I believe way more expensive. Dearer enough the the place I get my offcuts laminates two pieces together for the thicker bits instead of buying the thick stuff.
Yes. It takes a bit to get 'em started though.

soundman a peice for a splash back at about 77mm and 1m long ya can get about 12 to 15 blanks. Most of the corian is about 1/2" or 13mm thick so ya have to glue the halves together/\/\/\ MAKE SHURE YA GLUE THE UNFINISHED SIDES OR THE GLUE WILL NOT TAKE/\/\/\ then ya have to squar the blank to 3/4" or 19mm on all 4. So ya wind up with a hole bunch of slivers. I got a bag of them just waiting for inspration.
Skew it would look good backwards nice job!!!
Touchwood the nice thing about this stuff is the color goes all the way through. It takes nice to a sque chissel and hardly no polish/\/\/ I use renaissance wax /\/\/

13mm..... i'd get a pen out of that. you just have to be realy carefull about drilling.
Big fat blanks I just hand hold.... skinny stuff I do in a drill press vice.

Corian
Colours seem to be around a half inch, white is thicker the local dealer here in Canberra once told me he would sell me offcuts search fee 40 dollars and some outrageous price per square foot and visits the factory in the U.S.A on a regular basis.Muttered all the way out his door found some and made thirty or so and in a display case showed them to his wife one day,she went delerious and wanted to buy them all.I told her that her husband had said you cant use it for pens etc you need special saws and so on and by the way they are not for sale.Since made a lot and now use pin jaws in the lathe to drill them and small wood pieces.
The drill I only use is called a De Walt Extreme 2,HSS-G,7mm.
It is 109mm overall length,66mm cutting part, has an integrated drill point in the centre and quite economical and long lasting with hex cuts on the shaft ti remove turning at the grip end whilst drilling dead finish or such timbers, break out is now almost a thing of the past.
