What about Yew
I received a blank of Yew from Norwich in England as part of our club's
involvement in being "sister" clubs.
The blank was a little larger than required so I cut a slither from one side
and glued it diagonally within the blank. I think it helped to just add a
little more interest.

thats a great way to add a little extra to a plain timber
some light weight cardboard glued in between the cross section can add a lot as well
great finish too
