    Default Incra wave

INCRA were advertising their INCRA Jig in Fine Woodworking magazine in 1990 with a photo of a "wave" design on a box lid. The ad said that free templates for making the INCRA Wave are included with each INCRA Stop. In a side bar it states that the INCRA Fence System includes: Free INCRA wave plans, templates and instructions.

There doesnt seem to be a mention of this "wave" after that time. It isnt mentioned in the original INCRA Jig manual or the later Master Reference Guides. Does anyone know what happened to it and the templates?

    Hi Grahame,

Nice of you to chase this up. I think they got the system patented around 1989 and there was a lot of development shortly after that. I suspect Mr Perry McDaniel was busy designing all the variations and writing manuals. The Wave was most likely his creation so he must know what happened to it and why it was abandoned. If you are in touch you might ask him about the cornerpost dovetail, it seemed to be one of his favourites. If they have any old copies of the original wave templates and instructions I wouldnt mind a set.

Thanks for your interest, hope all is well in your patch.

    Regards,

    Hi Barrie

Personally I wouldn't really worry about any templates, just make your own, unless your collecting them of course.

If you're not clear on exactly how to make them, search using the following words, complementary curves routing.

    Hi Feckit

Thanks for the tip; I have made simple templates using the back of old imperial ones that fit in the positioner but the Wave defeated me. I will check out your suggestion.

    Cheers Barrie

    Hi Feckit,
A bit of a misunderstanding, maybe I didn't explain myself too well. Your link led to vids of the normal way to make complimentary curve templates on the router table, the method that can be used for any curve you like. I was interested in the INCRA Wave because the ad implied (although didnt state directly) that the templates for the wave had something to do with the INCRA Positioner. Every thing I have ever done with the Positioner has involved moving the Positioner and/or the workpiece in a straight line. I cannot see how you could use it to do a continuous curve. Their templates are strips marked with spacings for straight cuts eg dovetails, box joints etc and they fit in the Positioner. But Mr Perry McDaniel is a smart man and maybe he has come up with some trick that I dont know about. So I am curious as to what it was all about. Maybe Grahame can find out.

If I was to guess I would say the INCRA WAVE templates are just two complimentary curve templates for that particular curve made by the usual method you refer to, and included in the advertised package as a "come on" to boost sales at that time. They would not involve the use of the INCRA Positioner at all. That would explain why they disappeared in later INCRA POsitioner kits. But I could be wrong, so I will be interested in what Grahame finds out.

    Thanks for your interest anyway.

    Cheers
