Default Any tips on using sugar soap on painted woodwork?

The paintwork in my house - doors, skirting boards - is discoloured through tobacco smoke. I intend using Mangers Sugar Soap to clean it down, now that we have both stopped smoking.
I have read somewhere that unless you wash every last trace of it off the woodwork, you will have problems painting. But I don't intend painting it for a while - the paint is sound. Its just discolouration.
    Any experiences or tips?

No ideas on the painting but well done on the quitting.
