Ceiling Joist support
Hi All,
I'm adding and extension to an existing house which has a gable roof. The new extension has a 7 degree pitch starting at the new wall and ending at the existing house. The plans call for a flat ceiling in this new section but I wanted to just plaster the existing rafters and collar ties as they are. This means the new flat ceiling will stop at the existing house and extend vertically up to the old ceiling. My problem is one end of the ceiling joists will not have a load bearing support underneath them.
There will be a lintel in this area to support the new rafters so I was wondering if I can use brackets to attach the ceiling joists to the lintel? I don't want to put anything under the joists as there is already a load bearing beam as part of the structure and another will look horrible.
If I can't use brackets I'm wondering if a hanging beam suffices for support? The width of the room is 3600mm so going off the standards I would need a 140 X 45mm hanging beam which I don't think would fit anyway because of the low pitched roof.
Thanks in advance!
