Compact blue metal stone shed base?
I have ordered a shed kit (wood with metal roof) and the supplier says that a boxed 10mm to 20mm diameter crushed rock base 100mm thick is adequate for a shed base. The supplier also recommends compacting the crushed rock which is my case will be blue metal stones.
I gather that stones are largely self compacting anyway so I am wondering if compacting will make any difference?
I have already removed the grass, created a box, and compacted the soil (3.5 hp hired compactor) before I put down the stones. If there really is a benefit of compacting the stones then should I hire another compactor to do that with or something else e.g. tamper?
I have a feeling that a tamper would be more effective, a compactor tends to burrow a bit, making creating a level surface harder methinks?
By the way the shed has 12 small stumps attached to the floor subframe which can sit directly on the crushed rock. However, I will be placing 400mm x 400mm x 40mm concrete pavers between the crushed rock and the stumps.
