Dreaded concrete cancer
Hi I'm newbie (to the forum) so be gentle
We've got a 1950's house which has a concrete deck at the front. It has concrete supporting walls all round and is about 3 meters above ground level, it's got low sandstone pillars with 2" water pipe running around the edge as a barrier (wouldn't be legal height-wise now but was OK in the 50's). Basically the deck has cracking right through it where the original reinforcement has rusted and expanded. This allows water infiltration into the area below which is currently dirt-floored and not in use. You can see from below that the reo was dropped straight onto the form work and being plain bar (not modern deformed bar) and having not used bar chairs it has corroded really badly.
I would like to make better use of the area below the deck but the leakage is an on-going issue, I've tried a waterproof membrane with various surfaces over it but the cracks just keep re-appearing. Has anyone on the forum had any experience of cutting out rusted reo and welding in new then restoring the area with either an epoxy or cement-based grout? I realize I'd have to support the slab during this work but it's not a big surface area, maybe 3m x 3m with a huge pillar in the centre underneath...
