As far as I can tell, standards everywhere are dropping, not only in the building industry. A couple of examples, a friend had his car serviced and was charged for an air filter, but it wasn't replaced. I tried taking a short cut on painting some MDF, and failed miserably, took me 3 times longer than it should have, to come to what I classed as an acceptable finish. But what is an acceptable finish??? As long as the customer is happy with the end product, to me is an acceptable finish.
I've been involved in numerous trades over the years, from builders laborer on housing and construction, to running my own business. I looked at everything I did, if I wasn't happy with the job, I knew the customer wouldn't be.
Everyone has a timed schedule to do the job in, if they can get away with taking short cuts, they will. So sometimes they can get away with it and sometimes they can't.
KrynTo grow old is mandatory, growing up is optional.
