I'll probably end up answering my own question but here goes:

The Post

is the top of this very tall post.

The railing was rotting so is being replaced with 150x 50 Kwila

Close up after digging with a screw driver

What would be the best repair?

Some of the rotten bits in the rail had been dug out and filled with builders bog (by someone else) but the timber kept rotting and the bog went soggy and fell out. It's a wood fungus causing the problem.

I think I have some short bits( 400mm) of post material under the house (haven't looked yet) would splicing a piece of good wood on be an option after cutting the rot off back to good wood? - Would it be strong/safe enough? Would you lap the joint or cut it square? - epoxy glue and run a long coach screw down the middle? I'd prefer to make the repair as invisible as possible.

Open to all ideas.
