Timber joining

Hi,

I asked a similar question a little while back, but thought i'd ask again and this time include a couple of pictures to help visualise my problem.

I have a few rafters which have rotted out on the ends of the eaves which i need to repair. The pictures show extent of the damage, i'm having trouble deciding which approach I should take to repair the rafters. As the rafters are externally exposed, i would like the repairs to be as invisible as possible.

Can anyone who has had similar experiences offer any advice?

With both you'll be right to put dummy rafters in.

The one against the weatherboards, cut it out along parallel with the line of the birds mouth on the outside of the supporting beam (or even half way over it). You'll be able to fix the dummy replacement to the weatherboards. It's not taking much of a load. Of course you might have to pull a few tiles up to do this.

The one against the facia, just cut it flush with purlin (in picture), and replace with a dummy. There's no load on that one so she'll be fine just fixed back to the facia.
