Default Verandah post and safety rail

I have a front verandah without any railing and hand rail for the steps. There is a single 2 inch gal support pipe about eight feet on one corner. I want to instal fence and railing to steps.

In the process I would like to decorativley box in the pipe and incorporate it as a corner of the fence. What are my otpions as to how to fix the timber around the gal post?

The whole structure is to be painted. What wood should I use?

Alan, what is under and over the pipe? What does it connect to?

I'm assuming under would be the junction of a floor joist and bearer and over would be a verandah rafter.

It may well be easier to hire two acrow props to support the roof load and remove the pipe and substitute it with a 100 X100 hardwood post, fixed to aforesaid joist/bearer and rafter.

If you box the pipe you may have trouble securely fixing the the bottom and hand rails to it.

    Tell us more.

    Cheers

    Mick

    Thanks Mick for the response.

The floor of the verandah is a concrete slab. The roof is a fibro type material no doubt nailed to a timber frame. Sorry fir the ommission.
