folks, we have an ugliness problem which dictates some severe remedial action. Our house when we bought it had a solid brick front wall on the verandah. Seriously, no windows at all, just a few breeze blocks in the brickwork. so it was like looking at the side wall of an industrial dunny. seems the guy before us wasn't particularly well and he had the front of the house bricked up to protect himself from outsiders. very sad, really.

so, first job when we moved in was to get a concrete saw and take out all the bits that weren't supporting the roof which left us with seven columns along the front edge of the verandah. unfortunately, one of these columns is smack bang in the middle of the front door. the plan is to put a beam in running along the top of the columns on either side of this middle one and knocking the sucker out. trouble is, i don't know what sort of beam i should use.

the verandah roof is colourbond, and roughly 1.2m wide, and 10m across so not so heavy. the gap between the two outer columns is roughly 4.7m.

any suggestions?
