    Default Re-Oil of Deck

    Hi WWF,

After 2 years of painting the outside of my QLDer I have finally finished. I can now set about oiling the deck.

On advice from a part time painter I am going to vlean the deck with Intergrain Reviva and then oil with Intergrain UltraDeck. The deck is an unknown hardwood of approximately 140m2, with no gaps between the boards and completely undercover.

I have many questions about the whole process however my initial question is around removing the drips of house paint and overspray. I know i can physically remove these with a heat gun and sanding however I am a little concerned this could result in a patchy finish.

Does anyone know if this is an issue?

All depends on how long the paint has been on there - if there's noticeable fading on the deck, then you'll notice the difference when you oil as well, as the paint will have stopped the fading on the wood underneath (and it'll be like tinting a different colour timber).

Perhaps remove some of the smaller dots first and see how the timber looks underneath? Then you can look at the larger splatter marks. In the end though, you're probably going to have to remove all the paint anyway and then make a decision to sand or not sand the timber to bring the consistency of colour back.
