Default Old house wiring new aircon install...

Am planning to install a 8kW reverse cycle aircon. Ive lookedup the specs and it draws a peak of 19A (11A standard).

Now I live in a 60's home which has has an upgrade to a safety switch at some point but a lot of the wiring is the rubber stuff and I want to make sure it can take the load.

Spoke to a local power co guy the other day he told me the house has a 55A fuse to the power line. A Neighbour mentioned most homes in the area are only 35A.

Im a little worried about the wiring being able to cope. Ive noticed the lights flicker briefly when the kettle or the fridge turns on.

My sparky tells me any inverter unit is ok should go in no issues but Im a bit doubtful as he didnt even ask me what the model number and capacity of the unit is.

    Does it sound ok?

    Default Get a sparky in

Contact your local friendly electrician and ask him to do a Maximum Demand calculation and to check your neutrals

I agree that a maximum demand calculation be done.

Also, if new wiring is installed in an installation that has old 'non compliant' wiring, you may find that the old wiring must be replaced, particularly if the old wiring exists in the Main Distribution Board (meter box).

Your Fujitsu Unit should be just fine, is it running R410A refigerant?
The figures you quote give a COP of 3 - which is good.

If you dont have a RCD get one - please

If you have VIR black rubber insulation, it might be time to get rid of those rewirable fuses, while getting the RCD installed. I would place this higher on the to do list than the Air con unit.
Some VIR wiring might still be ok, but its probably time. This is not what you wanted to hear, this needs to be done anyway, a cond or no a cond. Costs are 2 to 4000 sorry bring expensive news.

Are you also are running any wood machinery, or compressor as well? The standard supply these days is 80A I think.
