    Default Halogen downlight bulb removal

I have recently moved into a house with 12V halogen downlights. I can't work out how to replace the bulbs as their diameter is greater than the surround so withdrwal downwards is not possible. I've been inthe roof and can see no obvious way of withdrawing the bulb upwards. The surrounds themselves seem to to tilt in the frame. Can anyone help please?

    Thanks Biko

I've got some gimble mount halogens, the face of the rotate about 90 degrees and the whole lot comes out. Perhaps yours are similar?

As atregent says, usually the light is changed by just rotating the inner part of the face. This should then drop down where you'll find the globe held in place by 2 metal pieces. Simply pull the globe out and put a new one in. Oh and it doesn't matter which way you connect the 2 wires to the globe either (turn off the light switch first).

When I replaced the lights in my place I found that the entire assembly pulled out of the holes cut in the roof. I could then disconnect the wire and get down from the ladder to replace the bulb.

They were held in place in the ceiling by two long(ish) prongs that were squeezed together (gently) to slip back into the hole in the roof.

I found this out after climbing into the roof and getting filthy dirty of course.

Some have an insert that rotates 45deg and comes out first then the lamp pulls out of its spring holder , you will need a fine screwdriver to disconnect the lamp itself from the cable.
