    Default re-opening a fireplace

Hi, long time reader, first time poster. Just wondering if anyone knows the best way to re-open a fireplace? Our original fireplace has a condemed heater in front of it that leaks gas into the room. Obviously we have stopped using the heater, but coming into winter we dont want to freeze. Being short of cash, we thought the easiest way around this would be to pull it out and re-use the original fireplace. Any ideas on how to do this and the difficulty level would be much appreciated.
