2nd Bowl, 1st inlay band
Here's my second bowl, not happy with turning a bland bowl, I have made a nice little coin or bits and bobs bowl. I was time constrained and I guess I did rush just a touch but it all goes in the learning bank. I know where I went wrong so next time I can be a bit more careful. I can't remember what the wood is. It's about 100mm in diameter and a touch shorter than originally made due to dovetail tenon splitting so needed to reseat. Now about 45mm high.IMG_3501.jpgIMG_3503.jpgIMG_3504.jpgIMG_3505.jpg
sorry about the wayward pics yet again.

Hi Fumbler,
Looks pretty good to me nice thin walls a shape that is pleasing to the eye and the banding looks well done. What have you used in the banding material.
Regards Rod.Rod Gilbert.

Very nice Fumbler.
I don't quite get what the process is here. Do you turn the bowl, putting a groove in it of appropriate width, then fit the band later?
I'm also surprised to see it bend to such a small radius - that stuff generally splits if bent too much. Had it been soaked or steamed or something?
Cheers

yes, I turned the outside of the bowl, cut the recess then set the band in slightly lower than the bowl edge to allow for sanding, then used CA to hold in place. Then slowly worked around the bowl whilst on the lathe with accelerator. Then sanded down and finished the outside before reversing in the chuck to turn the inside. I should have used a hair dyer to warm up first and make plyable but it wasn't essential, had the bowl been a smaller diameter it may have put the band under a bit more pressure. I had to hit the memory bank for High school math. I cut the band to where the ends matched , measured the length to find the circumference, then used D=C/TT and turned down to correct diameter.
