Default 6th month anniversary! (and a finial)

This week is the 6th month anniversay of when I bought my lathe!!!

I should make something to mark the occasion. Hmmm, but what?

    Oh, I made a finial!

I tried to make things sharp - but then I'd sand it and lose the sharpness. It's tiny, made from a jarrah pen blank. It's 9cm (3.5") and the pointy bit is 2mm to the first 1.5cm, then 3mm, then swells out.

I tried to get the round bits round. I didn't manage to get everything perfectly spaced. The point went a little scewiff once it was cut off and I sanded it. Doesn't matter in hair sticks, matters in finials! hmmm

I used the roughing gouge, the skew and the parting tool. It's not that I'm not taking your advice about the detail gouge Ken, I just don't have one small enough.

I think I was influenced by the fact that they are having a medieval joust at Fort Linton today!

    Getting better.

What grit and sort of paper are you using?

There is a knack to sanding "real turning stuff".

You start at the bottom of a cove and work up to the detail so you don't dub it over.
