Thought I would have a change from turning bowls, plus I was looking at something that could be used for a demonstration with a short time frame. Reading the 2020 February Woodturning magazine from the UK, I came across an article called, "Handbag Mirror"; this looked interesting.

Scoured the web and procured some 50mm mirrors for a look and see. The article used 63mm diameter, probably 63.5mm which is 2½"; I digress. The 50mm diameter mirrors were really nice and small. I rummaged around and found a piece of old shelf that I have had for around 40 years, softwood, pine I suspect.

The mirrors themselves are not glass, something I didn't expect. They appear to be some kind of plastic with an adhesive back; just remove the contact sheet. The front is a mirrored surface with a semi-opaque tear off once you have things in place. This was my learning unit, nonetheless it was easy and quick(ish). Time was needed to edge to exact clearances for the mirror, other than that things went fairly quickly. The adhesive backing wasn't up to the job, so some cyanoacrylate fixed that.

I was surprised at how light it is, so was the missus. Plopped it onto the electronic scales, 8gm.

Size is 56mm diameter, 9mm thick. Finish is Tripoli, 2 coats followed by Shellawax 2 coats. After photographing and resizing on the computer, I saw some marks in the larger circle on the rear; I'll have to expedite the new glasses I'm sort of needing now as I can't see that in the flesh.

Mick.
