    Default My first ornament ...

Well technically my first, second and third attempts at Christmas ornaments and finials.

Finials are substantially more difficult to do than to watch being done on Youtube and the half dozen bust ones are in the bin.
These are on my list of things to get good at so that I can have a few really nice ones for gifts next Christmas. Quite happy with the third attempt and can see these are going to teach my quite a bit about sharpening, tool control and sanding/finishing.

Bodies are from macrocarpa and finials/caps are mahogany finished with a few coats of walnut oil and then a diy shellac friction polish and then some wax.

    cheers
    Robin

P.S. taking photos at my lathe has made me realise how yellow my lighting is - two desk lamps with daylight energy saver bulbs - might have to try one of the cool ones to get some more blue light.

    Hi Robin,
Nice work. I did a similar one using a Sea Urchin shell as the body and found myself with an order of half a dozen for Xmas stockings.
A quick word on the lighting though. Not sure what camera you are using but if you play with the White Balance settings you should be able to correct the colour. Similarly if you have a photo editing program of some sort you should find a White Balance adjustment in there also.

    Cheers,
    Guy
