Arthur i promised to post photos of the bowls you gave me to finish
Well all didnt go to plan - i polished one up and it looks great
Attachment 100663 Attachment 100662
so i then put the "roughed out" one in the lathe and was sanding it
and
oops
you know how there is a bead on the top
well
during sanding, the bead was disappearing so i thought "david just clean that up a bit"
thats when the point of the skew (used as a scraper) caught on the hard bit (knot/feature) and there was a bang and the next thing i know it went past my ear in 2 bits, with one left on the lathe so this then became a search recover and repair to see what i end up with. Sorry about that
Attachment 100664 Attachment 100665
Maybe i should have kept this to myself.
cheersregards

wait a minute
I think he's going for the sympathy vote
trying to suggest that nature was against him
this isn't fair especially when we (whom mother nature detests) actually manage through good fortune and the tides of mars to turn something halfway decent.
I think there should be demerit points for trying to sway the voting publicregards

With the Ballarat BBQ and final judging of this competition just 2 weeks away i thought it would be remiss of me not to remind forum members wishing to contribute a bowl to this charity fundraiser that they have just 2 weeks to post it to me.
So get in the shed this weekend pick out a nice or plain peice of wood and make something similar to one of these.
You might make one better - we dont mind the competition has closed but all donations are still very much apreciated.
All entries/donations i know of so far are now at my house and i might say there is some very fine stuff there.
Cheers
Oh and the BBQ well of course you are all welcome if you are a member - give your perference hereregards

Just an update
Here is a photo of all the 26 donations and there was also a couple of cash donations received as well
I have a meeting with the representative for Grants, Marketing, Events and Appeals for Cystic Fibrosis Victoria at 10 am tomorrow (Friday) to see his ideas on marketing these great donations. I will take about 4 or 5 of teh bowls/platters with me to give him an idea of what was donated to raise funds for them.
I will keep you posted as to how it goes.
Cheersregards

Went to Melbourne this morning to meet with the Cystis Fibrosis man and came away very bouyed with the result.
I took down 6 items including the big platter from Tim and they couldnt beleive how good they looked. Tim's platter did a lap of honour of the office with outstanding remarks.
They have their annual Dinner dance on June 20th (i think) and are going to include the bowls/platters in their "silent auction". All will have an estimated retail value, a starting price and a reserve price set on them. He assured me that at this event the patrons have a good night , a few drinks and are happy to "loosen" the purse strings for a the charity.
Those that fail to sell at this event will then be sold at either the "race day" in December or offered on the wesite or at stalls that CF hold at various shopping centres around Melbourne.
So i will now pack them all up and deliver them to the office in Melbourne and they are happy to take it from there.
I have requested that they keep me informed of the progress of sale and the size of the donation we contributed to CF.
I have been requested to get the following to information to help promote and sell them .
A bit about the maker/designer including age, wood experience, type of "day job" they do and anything else that may interest the buyer.
Type of wood, finish
Recommended retail price
Description of the competrition/event.
Over the next day or so I will send a PM or email to all donors asking them to fill in a questionaire that will then give me the details they asked for.
Cheers and thanks againregards
David

Congratulations on all your hard work David, not bad for a sanctimonious newbie

Well done David.
Making the piece was the easy part.
Converting that into cash is the hard part.
If the selling side is successful and works well, we could do the same again next year?
I'm sure we could persuade, bribe, threaten, a few more members to be part of this.
I would like to give a vote of thanks to David for all his work in orginising this.
One little story out of school.
David came to pick up my entry when he was in Adelaide with the B double.
When he rang for directions I assumed he would come bobtail (without trailers).
When he turned up he had a trailer attached.
We live in a residental suburb with narrow streets, lots of trees and 90 degree corners.
When he left I gave him directions to get back onto the main road and he headed off, only to find the road blocked so he had to reverse out and do a three point turn at the end of our street.
Yes he did work hard on that pick-up.Some days I turns thisaway, somedays I turns thataway and other days I don't give a stuff so I don't turn at all.
