    Default Bowls from a plank.

I saw a video of an old Indian (I think?) bloke who had a primitive lathe and tools that looked as if they were made from old leaf springs. He was sat on the floor with the 'lathe' set in the deck. He held the tools with one hand and one foot! And finished uo with some lovely bowls.

So I thought that if he could do it then I might be able too. So I had an offcut of oak

Squared it off and cut it to round on my band saw, put a dovetail chuck bit on both sides, mounted it on my scroll chuck and cut the

It was then assembled and glued, mounted on the lathe and this was the result

I turned and finished the outer first using the mounting spigot on the inside. Then it was reversed and the outside done. The layers were placed at 90º to the top and bottom and that gave it a nice grain pattern.

That wasn't the end and I wondered what 2 contrasting woods would look like?

    Well, I like it

Plus, I finished up with 2 bowls.

    Default nicely done

One of our more well known turners who has since passed Bruce Leadbetter had a tool for cutting rings out to make plank bowls

Thank you Hughie. The tool used by me is a ⅛" Crown tools miniature parting tool. The one in the middle. It's narrow enough not to take out too much width and narrow enough to take the curve in the cut as it gets deeper, if you see what I mean. And even although I take it easy on the speed of the cut it's quite strong enough not t cause problems.

It's the one in the middle. Just as a matter of interest, the spindle gouge at the top is just ⅛" jobbie and it scares the hell out of me! If there's more than an inch of overhang it chatters like hell!
