    Default Burl bowls - attn:Hughie

Loving this retirement gig! Hughie passed through a few years back and dropped off some burls which I haven't had the time or need to turn until now. Finally dug a couple out when my New York customer/friend wanted a 'sculptural' bowl to make a statement on her dining table. Turned both so she could see what I was thinking and maybe choose one - bought both!! Hughie didn't know what type of timber they were and I have no idea either but the red one is as hard as the hobs of hell - took me 3 times longer to finish it than the resin burl did as I didn't get over 750 rpm for the entire thing. I suspect the red one is Coolabah or something similar. Not even going to hazard a guess what the resin burl is but that resin comes out like garnet chips while you're turning it - great way to defoliate .

The Coolabah bowl is 350mm across.

    Hi Vern
Looks a lot like Blackbutt Burl. I've turned a bit and it looks the same including the raw burl. (my photo is a little dark.)

Hi Vern bit late to this one,hmm not sure now myself the red is most likely Mallee and the resin could salmon gum. As to retired yes it does have its benefits
