Maybe it would be a good idea to take the whole tailstock back to Timbecon and get them to show you how to remove the live centre.

OK so it sounds like the push rod is too narrow to contact with the outside rim of the live centre (if both the push rod and the live centre are standard with the lathe it is a design fault). You need to find another rod that is larger in diameter than the centre hole of the live centre and still fits through the handwheel/tailstock screw. Use that to tap the centre out. If worst comes to worst, take the quill and cetre back out of the tailstock again, hold the quill carefully in a vice with wood on the jaws to protect it from scratching, look down the quill and see the rim of the end of the live centre taper, get something that you can hold against that and give it a tap to get the centre out. The key is to separate the live centre from the quill. If you PM me your number I'll give you a call and talk you through it.

Have a look at Simple Ejection Method For Lathe Tailstock Morse Taper Attachments - YouTube It shows how the tailstock works and it provides another solution to your problem of getting the centre out of the quill.

I meant to say that nothing including a m2b16 adaptor will allow you to fit the chuck until you have the centre (all of the centre including the taper shaft) out of the qill.
