Thread: buying a lathe this weekend

The thread size on the Timbecon would be the decider for me... Thread size: M30mm x 3.5TPI, which is compatible with the majority of lathes sold here in Australia. Should you later upgrade to another lathe any chucks and other threaded accessories you have acquired will fit most other lathe options... including all of the Vicmarc, Woodfast, Laguna and Stuby ranges.

You can add a bandsaw and grinder for sharpening, not to mention perhaps a sharpening jig. Down the track a chainsaw and heaps of other tools

Bought the Sherwood, and went for carbide tipped chisels. I can avoid the sharpening joys until next time...

The mounting frame looks quite light on that Sherwood ,be a good idea to get some base weight to it.If you're only turning small things like pens should not be a problem,however progressing to turning bowls it will require some stability.

100% they both looked light. I am hoping to make a cabinet to put it on...

i went to buy an MT2 keyless chuck - only to find that the black tab bit wont go inside the tail bit.
i am spewing - the guy at timbecon told me it was a standard fitting, and when i went to use it it turns out to be a funny shape so doesnt fit a chuck.

the guy at timbecon said it was not able to take the black tab - thats for a drill press?? and i needed an mt2/b16 chuck - i searched online and they all looked the same

do i need to replace the tail stock bit? or can i get some kind of adaptor thingy?

the piece of metal with the tab on it does come out of the chuck that i bought if that helps

I'm unsure of what your Morse taper looks like, but I think you mean the black tang hanging off the end of the taper is the issue.

If you wind your tailstock out about 20mm, maybe a fraction more, then give it a go. I think that is the issue and then it should work.


This keyless chuck on a Morse taper has has a black painted tang, is this the same as yours?

yes thats right - the tang wont fit into the hole.
the tailstock thingy has a tapered head and the tang will not go past it

Are you talking about the head stock, or the tail stock?

If its in the tail, wind the quill out a bit. This will give it room to slide into place.

MT2's are ejected by winding the quill IN..... (or shoving a bar in the bum and giving it a tap )

Have you tried that advice?

Some MTs are designed to self-eject when the quill is wound right back. You have to advance the quill a few turns to allow the tapers to seat again.

which i cant find???

the guy said that it is because the tapered shoulder of the tail fitting is there - it is bloking the chuck arbor

i did try it yes - the tailstock tapered head just moved right along with it... the smallest part of the drill arbor is too big...

I eventually ground the tang off on my jacobs chuck’s MT2 taper, so that I could get a few more mm of drilling before needing to reset the tailstock. It wasn’t serving any purpose anyway and I’ve never missed it.
