    Hi Folks
    just looked through all out forum suppliers
    I am looking for some chess pieces they were bases and the tops the other parts were turned up out wood they looked about the size of pen blanks
    seen them is store that sells complete chess sets

    Hi Michael,
    Look for " Mike Darlow, Turned Chessman ".
    Maybe your Library has it. A great many designs.

    sorry I may have put it wrong the top and base is made of pewter then we as turners make the bodies on our lathes

    Do you mean these ? You are chasing the metal components ?

    I saw them a few weeks back at Oz Fair and thought I might try casting my own bases and tops using PR and maybe aluminium if I get the moulds right.

    I would have thought it would be easier to cast these with pewter rather than aluminium?

    Pewter would be far easier to melt.

    A ready and relatively cheap source of pewter is various mugs and goblets from op shops, usuually around $1 a pop.

    You would still have the problem of getting the originals and making a mould from them though.

    I originally thought of aluminium as I have quite a lot of alum rod scavenged from vertical blind mechanisms but it's worth looking at pewter if it's a cheap as you say. The lower melting point would make it cheaper and easier too. I haven't cast metals for 25+ yrs and I'm no where having a working near set up anyway.

    Originals aren't really an issue. I've made a few chess sets before and was about to start again.

    yes that's the kit I have just emailed them hopefully I will get a positive answer will keep everyone posted
    if it comes down to it I might have to buy a set and cast a couple of sets to make as gifts
