    Turning does not seem to be very big in China . In three trips there I can't recall seeing any, although heaps of carving.

    If you are willing to pay a bit more you can get a better lathe:

    Not wood lathes, but you may get the idea.

    There are some really cheap bad wood lathes made in China. What can you buy new, made in AU or NZ for the same money?

    I got started down the garden path with a 7 X 12 inch Chinese metal lathe that I bought in a pawn shop for $150. It would hold + - .005 on metal. I made a few small things of wood on it and then moved to a 12 in. Delta, then 350mm Hegner, then 20 inch short bed Woodfast.
    So much timber, so little time.
