Well fellas, got the 3rd replacement SN2 chuck from Craft Supplies...I was sure that this one was going to be like the holy grail of chucks. As I mounted the chuck it seemed to exhude a spectral glow as if saying..."It's allright Ed, it's allright"
With that bit of encouregement, the rest of the thread spun up on the spindle. Now the moment of thruth...set the pully to the lowest speed, tentatively my foot foundered over the foot switch....contact. The chuck strats to turn..it's made 2 revolutions by now and the close observation revels that the SN2 is a clone of it's preceeding 2 brothers....wobble, wobble, wobble.
Got in thouch with Roger At Craft Supplies...he's baffled, I'm frustrated...shame we don't live closer...could have met at a gents club for a couple of cold ones, however the best that can be done is returning all the stuff they sent, get a credit applied to my account and live with one chuck again for a while.
Goes without saying...Teknatool stuff is off my Crissy list.
Excuse me while I go walking and wandering aimlessly about looking for cats to kick.Cheers,
Ed

Wow, this has been a saga for you Ed.
I guess Teknatool has achieved consistent quality control
Which chuck are you thinking of now?

B2003...not for nothin' there is no problem with the spindle (it runs true), as does my original nova chuck, and also a "knuckle buster" 3 jaw machinists chuck bought from Enco in ' 96 that I had threaded to 1 1/4 x 8 tpi.
In a round-about way testing on another lathe was done...about a year ago one of the guys from the club bought a Powermatic lathe but had not yet gotten a chuck, so he asked if he could borrow my Nova to try it out. The Nova ran true on it also.
Ozkaban...am going to check out Vermec and Oneway.
Ern...yea, definitely been a royal PITA, but it's been a learning experience also. Know now not to buy anymore Tek stuff.Last edited by Ed Reiss; 1st August 2009 at 11:53 AM. Reason: addition

Welcome Fred and thanks for the link.
Poor guy, sounds like he got the lathe from hell...must have been dropped on it's headstock when it was born
It certainly "appears" that Teknatool's chinese manufacturing facilities have been failing them and ultimatly the end user...not a good thing.Cheers,
Ed

Thanks Ed for sharing your Teknatool saga.
Had some probs with the QA on some Tek gear a little while ago and will only buy their stuff now if I go into a supplier and check it out (ie on a working lathe/chuck) before I leave the shop... my own QA check before I buy. Unfortunately this option is not readily available to everyone.
Must say that I have been happy with my last three Tek buys, including a new SN2 chuck and 100mm bowl jaws. Equally as good as a Vicmarc chuck and jaws that I got at the same time.

Chuck Resolution
Well guys, the saga is over with things ending on a positive note.
The three SN2 chucks have all been sent back to Craft Supplies with my thanks to Roger for all his help and tech support. Additionally I contacted Teknatool regarding my dis-satisfaction with the lack of quality and difficulty of use with the Nova Sharpening Centre, and they have agreed to a return/refund. It really is a shame that Teknatool has dropped the ball in their QC department, it will only result in future loss of revenue with po'd customers.
Now the good news, my new chuck was going to be either the Vermec or Oneway. Regretably the shipping charges were the deal-breaker for the Vermec, so I opted for the Oneway (even though the Nova jaws will not fit).
The Oneway arrived today. The immediate difference I noticed was the fit of the parts...no "slop" like there was on the SN2. The scroll mechanism operates very smoothly. The "taper adapter", however is what makes the difference to having the chuck run true...and it is running straight as an arrow, absolutley no wobble.
So...daddy's happy now and can get on with the great box challangeCheers,
Ed

Good to hear you've solved the problem. I hope Teknatool get their act together soon with their quality control.
I have been looking forward to part 3 of you WIP!Keith
