Claret ash

Had these two logs given to me today. Huge lumps of claret ash, each one is 400 mm across at the narrowest and 500 mm at the widest point and 600 mm high. The tree was cut about 5 or 6 days ago and Dad was kind enough to seal the ends with some acrylic paint, but they are both starting to split at the centre so I will fire up chainsaw after work tomorrow and cut the guts out.

Can anyone tell me what claret ash is like to turn and what sort of color it will be? I cant find much at all of anyone having turned it.

Pale colour.

If it's anything like what I know as English Ash it may be fibrous while green but stable so good for greenturning. The late growth will be narrow and open-grained. A good timber for texturing treatments (blow torch, wire brushing etc.)

There's some egs in Raffan's book on The Art of Turned Bowls.

That's a good score. I'm envious.

Stunning looking clock DJ, great job on the turning, love the way you shaped it to take advantage of the grain pattern.

and nuh it looked small on the Vicmarc

it's only about 220-250mm dia

You should get some inspiration from that clock Shorty. Especially in relation to the flow of the grain.

I wonder how well it will take a dye?

Poorly if my experience with 'English ash' is any guide. Soaks quickly into the late growth and hardly penetrates the early.

thanks for this post & replies - gives me confidence - I've a 20+ year old calaret ash out the front of my house - trunk maybe 450mm dia - roots are growing everwhere - so Council & I have agreed to remove it & I get what I want (I hope) - brought a chain saw in anticipation (well I needed one !) - I'll have to clean stuff up to get space to store the timber
