Burl Hunting *** Caution, Naked Timber***
********This occurred on Private Property***********
Good Evening All
I was recently invited back to a property for a day in the bush hunting for Burls and motorbike riding with the kids. Thse are York Gum Burls, my favourite. I will process the burls soon by rough turning and carving to allow them to dry quicker.
The removal of burls has not harmed any of the trees which had their burls removed previously.
Oh yeah, it's my Birthday today as well
Cheers
Willy

Happy birthday Willy,
I guess you can attribute your longevity to your staunch insistance on personal safety:
Coveralls and safety boots
Safety specs and hearing protection
Safety step? (I guess two out of three aint bad!!!)
Many happy returns, and Sue and Danni send their regards.

The Trees.
Hi Willy,
Yes, Many Happies, but how many is that ?
Just a Question, do you or don't you have to put some kind of paint or something on the Tree where the Burl came off.
I'm not complaining of what you do, just interested, that's all.
I have known, of Arborists using a Grey Coloured Paint of some kind to paint the ends of big branches that had to be removed.Regards,
issatree.

Hello Issatree (is that really your name??)
Anyhoo, yes, in the past I have used anchor seal, house paint etc, but generally (IMHO) trees have their own inbuilt system of sealing a wound through natural causes. I have seen trees on this property which have had their burls removed 5 years ago. I don't bother sealing them anymore, but do harvest mostly in winter whilst the tree is not growing, but dormant. Similar to pruning
Hope this answers your question (and more importantly, is correct)
Cheers
Willy
