    Default Collaboration piece, Willy and Neil Wright (Da Sensai)

    Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen
    Long time since I started a thread.

    This piece was an offcut from a huge garden monument type item. The owner of which thought it was firewood, as did I.

    Neil Wright was visiting WA, obviously pre Covid 19 days.

    He saw it and saw the potential, so convinced me to fill the quite large cracks with my favourite blend of blue mica and resin. Neil did the resin work whilst it was still a block of wood. No turning had been done yet. A mould was made for the outside of the log end and resin poured into the cracks, I think 2 or 3 pours were done.
    It took a lot, not sure how much as we did this approximately 2018-19.
    I thought the timber was still wet to turn so I waited until October 2020 before turning it.

    The starting piece was approximately 450mm across, 250 deep and weighed a fair amount. I had pre shaped it using the Arbortec Turbo, so it was running reasonably true from the start.

    Once running, my HSS tools didn't cut to well as it is all end grain and hard! Just produced dust
    Tried the TCT cutters with more success. Wall thickness left a little too chunky for my liking, but this decision was based upon a lack of enjoyment cutting end grain.

    Bowl was sanded to 600 grit, reversed chucked in the big Coles jaws, sealed and 10 coats of Danish oil applied.

    Overall, I am very happy with the outcome. I have had many people remark on the bowl whilst in the workshop.

    Willy,

    That is just wonderful. I like the filled random cracks, the blue contrasts well with the warm timber. It does not look heavy, thickness appropriate to size. Wonderful piece.

    Nah, just one pour, on the back of the ute running to get some vibration to help with the bubbles

    I know we rough turned the outside

    Did we do the inside too, or is that what you used the Arbortec for?

    Thanks for adding to the thread with photos and info.
    I thought at least two pours as I could discern a colour difference in the resin, I must be wrong

    We did mix a few jugs full of resin, and I must admit I'[m not that accurate in measuring the mica, so probably that. May have also tried to fill some voids after rough turning, not sure, too long ago

    Ive actually got another similar one to do right now. Not sure of the timber, initially thought it was Swamp Mahogany, was a very old standing dead tree but time will tell hopefully.
