Hi Guys,
Long time huh,. Anyway I read once and now use computer mouse pads (or should that be 'mice' pads) to protect the wood from the chuck. It is a bit thicker than the T shirt material T lady suggested but it seems to work well. You can really clamp the chuck tight and there is never a mark to the dovetail. Someone I told thought it would fly off the lathe but this has never happened to me perhaps because I make the chuck so tight. One Sunday at Wantirna trash and treasure last year I bought a great stack of mouse pads for about $2. I just cut them to shape and there is never a problem.

Hi Anne, welcome back.
Interesting tip. Not sure I'm game to try it as getting a bite on the tenon tells me there should be enough grip.
How hard do you work the gouge?Cheers, Ern

Hi Ern,
I don't specifically intend to use the gouge any lighter although perhaps I do without realising it. But, as I said, I have never had a problem.
cheers Anne
p.s. I saw Rodent last weekend at the Nationals

So where is Wantirna Market? Echnidna suggested it as a good tool hunting ground.

Wantirna Trash and Treasure is in an area opposite Knox Private Hospital. It is on every Sunday from about 8am until about 1pm. Every week the stalls change but I have got some great stuff, including woodturning gear and tools from there. There are some stalls that are always the same.
cheers

Just as a ps, the musk bowl reverted to its original beige a few days after finishing.
Never seen that before.Cheers, Ern

I found native bauhinia like that... it has a nice zebra stripe in it while fresh but it fades to dull brown once it is exposed to light.

If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Finished this today
Three pieces of 4x4 and two of 4x1. Glued together with titebond II
Merbeu and kwila(?), more timber donated to the cause by the fencing contractor.
finished with EEE and shellawax cream.
final size approx 270 mm x 70 mm deep
should have been about 10 - 15 mm taller but just as thought to meself "that's not correct technique" had an almighty catch and took a big chunk out of the rim. Oh well
Sorry about photos, the bestest camera spat the dummy and is about to go into the repairers. actual colour is closest in the first photo.
opinions?

very catchy peice. I like the orientation of the grain on the inserts.
Not sure about the curve or the size of the foot but that is only personal preference.
Very good job you should be proud. Luv the fleck in the Merbeu.regards

Noice. BYW, I think Murbu and Kwilla are supposed to be the same thing. And can have colour variation from honey to dark red depending on the soil it is grown in. I'mm doing some little murbu things at the mo. Its quite nice to turn, and gets a nice finish on it. Smoooooooooooooooth. Better than that Jarrah I was struggling with.. Will have to go and get some more.

Very nice, I like it, the contrasting stripes set the shape off well.

I find the piece "bowl" has an attractive grain and shows some initiative. I believe the maker will progress well just as we all have. As for bowl design, I often wonder who has the right to say that something is a bad shape or wrong dimensions. We all have in our mind's eye an image that we think is better, or as good as those in "the book". I believe that being critical of someone's first project is not unlike saying "gees, ya shudda read the book before bringing that child into the world". How do we get new things if everyone follows "the experts" ideas?. I, for one, would have been put down as a pup if someone had posted a picture for critique.
IMHO constructive criticism is usually only constructive for the one giving it. Encouragement is not any form of criticism. However sometimes outright criticism has to happen but not here.
No I'm not tired and grumpy, just giving my opinion. This is a very enjoyable forum.

As Ern said this is the critique section. if you only want encouragement post in the Woodturning General secton. This is specifically<style>specifically Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:72.0pt 90.0pt 72.0pt 90.0pt; mso-header-margin:35.4pt; mso-footer-margin:35.4pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </style><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--> for critique that is why it is posted here i think.
I am not trying to be grumpy either but when i see a post in this section i try to be more critical of it than normal as i think that is why it was posted in this section.
