bowl for critique
hi
Made this today from a blank I bought - White Pear - a wood I've never heard of before, but it's interesting. Cuts nicely and is strong - important when you're trying to keep the corners on a square one. It's 26cm square and about 3mm at the edges.
Comments welcome

Looks good from this angle, those cracks would have been a bit of a worry.
What does the base & foot look like?Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

I love square turned things. Working on some at the moment but I've glued waste bits around them this time. Yours looks great. Uuuum. Photo booth looks a bit naff though.

spalted beech hollow form
hello all, heres a recent piece i made from spalted beech, i turned the hollow form first then set it aside to dry for a few weeks then carved the outside using a mixture of hand and power tool methods. its inspired by john jordans work.
this was my first ever attempt at carving on one of my turnings.
as a newbie here i would like to post more pics of my woodturning work is it always best to post them here on this thread? or in genral woodturning?
right here i go i hope this works o.k

Very interesting.
But since this is a "critique thread, her are my thoughts about what could be better; the wood is very "showy" and perhaps would have been better shown of on a plainer form. Here the spalting fights withe the carving for attention. Maybe a more uniform grained wood would allow the form and carving to take center stage. So hop to it and do another one.anne-maria.

Hi - Yes, the cracks were a worry, but they stayed very stable and look great.
I try to keep the foot as shallow as possible, but leave the chucking recess, as I find it hard to rechuck a square bowl to take away the foot - must work out a way to do it though.
(Th photo booth is my kitchen, btw, not what it looks like)

I do like square things. Would love to see a pic of it sitting on a table.

Another square thing
Continuing with the theme of square things, some silky oak this time - customer didn't want the white pear bowl because of the cracks (I call them features) so hopefully she'll like this one.

I just had a careful look at the rim. It looks very consistent all the way across. Well done
Cheers,
Shannon.
