Square platter
Cole jaws will do it with some messing around.
Use only the lightest amount of pressure you can get away with. DAMHIKT!
Otherwise, turn youself a friction drive out of MDF, bring up the tailstock (3/4" BSP tap hose fitting over the live centre to reduce marking), and turn away as much as you can. Finish off by hand.Cheers, Ern

HuonPine Peppermill.
A good friend of mine managed to get me some Huon Pine when he was in Tasmania earlier this year. It really is wonderful to turn and it loves being polished and Shellawaxed.....
The unit has a Crushgrind mechanism and I modified the top a little to allow the "cork' to house the hexagon driver.
I made this for a mate of mine so it has the usual personalised remarks that make it unique.
The 'cork" is from African Wenge to get the contrast I was looking for.
I would appreciate your comments....

Harry,
Thanks for the comments. I use a simple software program to layout the lettering on paper and then transfer to the wood using a good quality carbon paper. I use a simple pyrography tool I have to then burn in the lettering.

Very, very effective!
No criticisms from me on this one...
(Actually, I may have to steal the idea. )

Thanks Ed,
Any chance you could tell me what 'chamoed" means in simple terms....
Normally when I have met people from New Jersey I have been able to nod or shake my head in the right places, but this time, I am scratching my head......
If anyone wants the rough dimensions that I used please let me know. There are a few modifications you need to make to the hexagon driver to get the cork proportions looking like a bottle..

Ha...know what you mean about not really understanding some "jersey speak"!
I'm from the central jersey / philly area, and we have a hard time relating to folks from north jersey/new york city area.
"Chamoed" is simply "chamofloged"Cheers,
Ed

Here a couple of pieces.
The first is some Eastern Sheoak. Approx 210mm in diameter. Not happy with the base, a bit too "uplifting" and too wide, needs to be about 30% narrower. It was turned quite thin and is light when picker up. It also had a few serious cracks and there was a bark inclusion that needed some attention too
The next is some white gum. Approx 250mm id diameter. Had a few serious cracks, also a bark inclusion and a white ant/ grub hole. I filled it with some malachite - the green stone you can see in the profile shot. It also is relatively thin though not as thin as the Sheoak.
All comments welcome - Peter
