Default Redgum Bowl from Railway sleeper

    HI

I got out in the shed today, yes on the stubby (I luv my STUBBY) and made a bowl from one of the peices of railway sleeper that jumped into the trailer on the way home from Jeffersons. I took all evasive action (as can be attested to by Skew) but i still ended up with a full sleeper and a couple of extra offcuts.

So here is the first bowl.

Trying new shape i havent tried before (straight lines)

Go for it it's in the critique thread awaiting comments

Sanded to 1200 then EEE and Glow.

    Cheers
    regards

    David

    Nice bit of wood David.

    Surprised it wasn't full of cracks, or gravel. Or did you pick it out so as not to chip the Stubby's duco? ;-}

That's a good shape to turn: plain sailing.
    Cheers, Ern

Ern hopefully Skew will come in here but they are replacing all the sleepres from Wodonga to about Euroa with concrete ones and some of those being removed have not been there that long.

I started to turn it round but it was pretty hard so took it off the lathe and cut a round blank on the bandsaw - it cut it easy and didnt seem to blunten the blade so i think it is pretty clean really.

Do you want a bit tomorrow when i pick up the chisel?

    Cheers
    regards

Yeah, I noticed the sleeper work last time driving down the Fume.

Must be getting slow as I didn't think of 'scientific whaling'.

I used to live near a suburban line and sampled some old sleepers for firewood. Heavy work.

And thanks, I wouldn't mind a blank. Swap you for a lump of Red Oak.

Some of the sleepers were in near new condition but I'd still go over 'em with the Mk I eyeball before putting 'em through the bandsaw or lathe, 'cos it only takes one stone in the wrong spot... but apart from that I wouldn't be worried. (Which is saying something, considering how many BS blades I've ruined on old sleepers.)

I just remembered that a nice fiddle-backed goblety sized piece beached itself on the trailer as we drove past, but I forgot to claim salvage rights when David dropped me off.

I hate giving critiques, but I guess I can force myself this time. To my eye, for the width of the rim the foot is too wide and it's too tall, making the sides too steep...

It's a form I like "in general" but with straight sides you really need to get the proportions right.

Personally, I like the foot to be about 1/3 the overall diameter & the height to be 2/3 of the foot. This gives a side slope of over 45° which I reckon displays the grain nicely on the interior. With straight, sloped sides that's really the only place you can see the grain when in normal use.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

My twp cents worth would be that you've softened the edges a bit much again. Which has kinda given the illusion that the form is a bit wishy washy. Straight sides are such a definite choice that in my mind the edges need to also be a bit more definate. Not sure about the transition from the sides to the bottom on the inside either.

I like the wood but......... and the quality of the finish is great.

Hi DiggerD ....welcome to the forum

Well, thats a shape that's not often seen, but you have handled it well. The transitions from base to sides to rim appear in proportion and flowing, but there is something that is like a half bubble off, but can't quite figure out what it could be

all in all well done I give it an A-

Hi Diggerd. What a nice bowl. I can really imagine a nice salad in it. Lovely flowing shape.

I agree with Ed. I think that the transition to the rim could have started just a little lower to soften the curve.
