Thanks for the comments. The rim curles over and the shape is reflected on the underside.
I see what you mean

G'day Digger,
Not too bad for less than a year at it, can you post some other details as well?
Dimensions
Timber type
FinishCliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Sure can
The bowl is 6" diameter and was a blank that I found lurking in a bag of other bits of wood I was give.
The wood itself is beech Which is a easy wood to turn and finish.
The finish I used is cellulose sander sealer and then carnauba wax, which was applied on the lathe whilst turning
Hope this helps

My charity bowl
I donated this bowl to a fundraiser recently
There has been some suggestion that the judges made critical comments concerning some of our efforts. Given I didn't hear any that may have been made about my effort I thought I would post here and let the comments flow - this is all about learning so be brutal if you want. (and I'm not in any way having a dig at anybody - at least this time)
I think the timber is Spotted Gum (not really sure as was liberated from nature strip) This piece had some spalting as I left outside on the mulch before cutting up. Finished in shellawax

I tried for a simple bowl to let the timber talk for itself.

SM...the wood certainly is spectacular and does "speak" for itself.
For the particular shape you were going for the base is too wide and would have benefited with a foot to lift it higher...or, if your not a fan of making a foot for the bowl, more of a continuous sweep resulting in a smaller base would have been better.Cheers,
Ed

The timber is great for this piece. I agree with the comment about a foot I also think it could do with one although only a small one just to lift it off the ground. Still a great bowl keep them coming

Overall I think you've achieved your aim of producing a bowl that would let the wood speak for itself, and an interesting bit of carbon it is.
Re feet, well we all have our fetishes and a nicely turned foot is one of mine. A foot can 'lift' and so lighten the look of a bowl.
Following Ed's lead next time if you have a foot and feel it might be better without then just look at it side on with a bit of card obscuring the foot and see what you think.
What helps is to look at it with fresh eyes so if you can just put it aside for a few weeks and come back to it.
BTW it doesn't look like Spotted Gum to me; at least not like the bits I've worked.Cheers, Ern

I am useless on this thread - I think everything looks lovely! To me, as long as it's not obviously clunky, or there is an actual fault, things like the design is up to the turner - art is subjective, not absolute, and what one person likes another might not.
I'd say "my 2cents" or "in my humble opinion" but I'm never humble and my opinion is worth more then 2 cents! (at least to me...)
Of course, I might also be WRONG! I acknowledge that!
I don't think I'm brave enough to put anything up here -yet!

Is Beauty an Illusion?
Is beauty an illusion?
For in the eye of the beholder
It may differ in perspective or in form
How do I know what you see, is the same as what I see
For what to you may be a rose
May to me appear a thorn
Is beauty an illusion?
And the different types of music
But a jangling of dreadful noise
For different types of music please different types of people
And the music you dislike
I may very well enjoy
Yes, beauty's an illusion
But it doesn't really matter
For illusions aren't as rare as they might seem
And although illusions differ from one person to another
Our illusions can co-exist
And so can we!

I wrote that as an altruistic 16 year old - and now I'm 47 - my mind hasn't changed, I still find it relevant. (and surprised I remember it after all those years!)

any idea what it could be? I only say spotted gum as the bark (or the bit I saw) looked a bit like spotted gum. Bear in mind it was a nature strip liberation and I only saw the timber in 1 foot lengths. I can post piccies of more that I sliced up (not spalted like this unfortunately) The timber also seems to be pretty stable - very few splits etc.
regards
Nick
