I think the "spotted gum" bowl only need a very small foot that you can't even really see from the side, just to lift it off the table top. And if I was really critical, the curve of the outside needs to be a continuous curve instead f going to a flat bottom. One thing foot rings allow you to do is continue the curve of the underneath right across, and the foot holds it off the table. (Oh god I'm so eloquent. ) Maybe a wobbly drawing will help. (Maybe not? ) Back in a tick.

Ok! So here is a really bad drawing quickly done in "word" Hopefully it can show what I mean about the curve of the form continuing through the foot ring, and the footring lifting it up above the table top. Makes the bowl seem lighter somehow. That's what we use to do in pottery, and it seems true in woodturning as well.

Dear modertor, is there some other format that I could put this drawing in so it doesn't have to be down loaded?

Nick, what TL's taking about could even be a simple half-bead or less.

It only needs to be high enough that the curve doesn't seem to merge into the table-top, that there's a dark "gap" underneath which the mind will see as the curve following through.

It makes the piece look... "lighter" in the same way that a round rock sitting on the ground doesn't look as heavy as a hemispherical one that seems to be half-buried.

    You still on the Mac?

On a Win PC you can simply press the PrtScr key to snapshot your screen and paste it directly into a paint program, so it can be saved as a .BMP, .JPG or other "picture" format.

Drawing it in a paint program in the first place would've been a simpler option.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

On Mac it's command, shift, 4, and you can select what is captured.

    Default Latest efforts

    G'day All,
Hopefully there will be pictures attached of box/urn and a bowl.
The first is a Redgum burl box with ebonized Redgum lip and finial - my first attempt at putting it all together. Height 200mm(8") by 100mm(4") at the widest point.Sanded to 600, 2 coats of shellac, steel wool and 2 coats of trad. wax.The white spots on the photos/box are voids in the wood. I like the classical appearance it has and I also like the fact that it looks like the front cover of a sci-fi paperback with a destroyed planet hurtling through space (drugs might help with that second thought)
The bowl is Gidgee - 90mm high (4 ish") and 160mm across( 6 ish"). Sanded to 800, EEE and 2 coats of Glow. I'm reasonably happy with the shape and finish but the mistake I seem to repeat with natural edge bowls is to leave tool marks( bowl gouge) up high on the wings., what am I doing wrong there and how can I stop it happening.
Thanks for looking and thanks for your thoughts,
    Bruce
