G'day All,
I am a newbie, who has just taken up pen turning. I am uploading 2 pics.
The first is sanded only
The second has shellawax polish on it.
Am I on the right track?

Only just caught up with this but yes I think you are looking good. Post a pic of the final pen. Cheers

G'day Grommett,
I don't have a pic of the finished pen but I posted a couple of finished ones in the other thread I have, where I am being a nuisance and asking lots of silly questions, but getting excellent replies

Is this a new method?
I'm a new self-taught turner (never spoken to another!) and have come up with a way of drilling holes on the lathe in any direction. This does away with the laborious use of a drill press. Here are some of my first works. I'd especially like feed-back on the goblet (DSCF3289) which took 2 weeks to make, 2 or 3 hours a day.
The biggest snag with putting plugs in is that everything seems to move over time and gaps open up, although they haven't in that goblet.
I do have pics of the goblet in progress if anyone is interested and could take some of my jig set up.

Well, you've already put your finger on my main criticism of this type of work. Not specifically plugs per se, but any turning that comprises of a multitude of varying wood types. (Most segmented pieces are fairly geometric, so at least with them you can "balance out" the worst of the movement, minimising problems.)
Having got that off my chest. nice bit of work! There's not much to criticise about either piece.
Oh... And welcome to the forums!

Pics of goblet
Thanks for your feed-back. I'll set the jig up and get some pics today.
Maybe I had no problems with shrinkage etc. on the goblet because it is entirely made of plugs?! Actually there is probably about 3 or 4 sq. cms. of the original pine goblet still there, but that's all.
Oh, and I like your quote which I may have to use for myself as I'm generally considered a bit weird! But how did you manage to enter it into the post upside down?

I like the concept of the goblet made entirely from plugs. I was wondering what the donor wood was
Not as sure about the bowl. The goblet has a funky look to it but the bowl looks a bit messy, even though it is a lot neater than the goblet. Does that make sense
Cheers,
Dave

A bloke in Townsville was doing that back in the '90s.
Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Have already posted a thread showing the jig etc. Go to
https://www.woodworkforums.com/f11/ho...-lathe-136017/
I have to say that navigating my way around this site is a bit hard. I could not even find that thread of mine and had to search my name to find it!
