Drying wood in a kiln
I'm in the process of planning a new workshop for woodturning and woodworking in general. I was wondering if it is worth building a small kiln for quickly drying timber (I would like to try salvaging logs from the local dump). My questions are:
What are the advantages and shorcomings of kiln drying?
What temperature does it need to operate at, and about how long should timber stay in there?

G'day Tristan
I would probably look at getting a small dehumidifier rather than a kiln probably wouldn't cost much more than making the kiln and should be infinitely better. But don't try drying logs in either. It won't work, but you probably already know that.
will probably come up with a couple of sites for you to visit but first have a look at Ararat Woodies Club Solar Kiln. http://www.ubeaut.com.au/awho_are_we.htm
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers
Neil

Think you'll find it's the motto for all the Royal (Commonwealth) artillery units.
Lets make an end of this one and get back to Tristan and his kiln v dehumidifier etc.
Cheers
Neil
