EPOXY (HIGH CLARITY) RESIN + HARDENDER (2:1 RATIO)EPOXY
EPOXY (HIGH CLARITY) RESIN + HARDENDER (2:1 RATIO)EPOXY
I have used some of this resin in a bowl edge and have a small problem.
While it ended up clear as water and hard, the surface has an "oil on water" pattern.
I contacted the manufacturer and we have agreed it was probably some oil coming through the wood during curing that has caused it.
The wood is Camphour, well seasoned and the rebate where the resin was poured was only finished with sanding sealer (several coats.
So I have learnt a lesson to seal the rebate better next time.
My problem now is to polish the surface to remove the blemish. Has anyone used this type of resin before and polished it??
If so was it successful and how did you go about it?
1200 wet and dry, Brasso and soft cloth?
Comments/instructions/suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
Lyle.

Epoxy does not finish to a high shine like other casting products and must be coated with something else to get it. I sand through the grits as usual and then coat with NC Lacquer which is the finish I use on the timber as well.

Thanks for the replies, DS and Brendan.
The resin surface is smooth as, but if you 'moon' it you can see the swirl, like an oil on water effect.
DS, I use Minwax WOP either satin or gloss on the wood. Will I need to sand/polish the resin to say 1200 grit then coat with gloss WOP? Will that remove the swirl?
Or will I just need to coat it with WOP?
I'll try and take a photo of the job and the resin surface.
Is there a better product?

I wouldn't sand it until you have tried some WOP on it forst or even wipe it down with some metho or soapy water. Even use some Ubeaut EEE or Brasso before you go for the sand paper. I prefer not to sand the resin surface if I don't have to. In the cases when I can get away with no sanding I spray with the NC lacquer and there is the swirl/oily look disappear. I think the WOP should be an acceptable substitue for the NC lac.

Thanks Brendan, I'll give the WOP a go.
I had a cast around your site and saw the 606 product. Would that be better than the stuff I am using? (I will watch your video later as I am at work now)
Without going into trade secrets, how did you finish the bowl with the embedded seed pods? Do you finish the wood that is to be in contact with the resin?
On my bowl I cut a rebate filled it with the resin with embedded stuff and was going to undercut it and then polich both sides. But the style changed to just a rebate filled with resin and embedded stuff.

Can't say I have seen that effect before, looks like some sort of contaminant (perhaps water/moisture). Try wiping down with metho and a green kitchen scratchy (no soap), then a clean rag, then metho again. Then use your WIP

It should polish with a high quality car polish [ the diamond finish polish]
