    Default New Favourite timber

Thought I should have a go at some Black Mulga I was given some time ago. Hard, hard, hard wood! It was a fence post on a station up north for many years and, to indicate hardness, was untouched by white ants while all around it was eaten. Wrecked two chainsaw blades splitting it. Nearly gave up but having turned it am very glad I have the rest of the post. The photos don't do it justice - the gold Knot flashes and ripples in the light.

Funny you should say that Ian. I am heading up to the station in a few weeks. Wonder if he will notice me replacing those strainer posts with star pickets?

Awesome finish on that wood. But two chain saw blades, that's getting expensive!

The wood is so hard that it had a lovely finish after sanding to 1000. The harder the wood, the better finish off the tool! I finished it with a coat of my home made wax - bee wax, pure turps, a bit of caranuba wax and rose oil.

You should tell him they would not be eaten by white ants.

If you are going to source some more it might be worth looking at the geometry of your chain cutters or getting a chain with TCT cutters.

My saw regrettably is too small for a TCT chain.

Last year while outback I was cutting various dunno-wood species to feed the brazier. Desert acacias and other stuff. Sure took a fine edge off fast!

But that's lovely wood you've turned.
    Cheers, Ern
