Very nice. Almost all of my turning blanks come from the firewood pile. My neighbour also goes out collecting firewood regularly and keeps an eye out for unusual looking wood / crotches etc for me. Often the really rough looking pieces turn out to be the best ones - I like to turn them roughly to shape, then scrape / dig out the bits I don't like and cast what's left in various coloured epoxy resins, before turning a final product.

It's amazing how many beautiful (eventually) pieces can turn up in the firewood pile.

A few years ago, after a set of bushfires, local firewood became rather hard to come by so the suppliers were scraping around their stooks grabbing stuff that they'd otherwise ignore. That year more than half of our firewood pile ended up being tagged for turning.

Pity that more than 90% of our stuff is ironbark or box... some spectacular grain but a right PITA on the lathe. 'Tis almost enough to turn me to the TCT side. Almost.

I remember pulling out an interesting piece from a friend's firewood pile and said I'd turn him a bowl... It turned out so nice I kept it, and never said anything to him about it LOL.

Definitely worthy the effort Hughie. Ugly firewood is my go to wood for turning.

The beauty of woodturning is you're looking for the worse, most gnarliest pieces that everyone else would throw out.
