Man, I've got so much to learn - outstanding! Like the others, I'd love to see the basic techniques in creating something like this.

I have a couple of VERY big hoop pine butts that have been out in the open under a tree for a couple of years now.
I am hoping for a similar looking result in the timber but I have no idea when to 'save' them from the elements.
    Hello Cliff,

I like to get them out of the weather asap. My workshop floor space is just about covered with timber too good to be left outside. I have some that have been garbage bagged for several months, possibly need to be taken out soon. The wood can become quite "crumbly" and tear-out can be a real problem. Grubs will attack them too. The last few pieces I turned recently were from outside the shed 6-7 months)and the logs were left in the weather and with all of this rain we have been having they were a slimy mess under the bark so I've definatly been wearing a mask when turning.
Could be a good idea to check it out soon.

Yup, they are 900mm long & between 700 & 900mm across & have been down for about 2 & a half years now.
I'll drag them out & have a prod at them with a chainsaw.
