    Default Some fresh Jarrah

    Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen

Long time since I posted, but forced into early retirement, so have got some time on my hands. I have been turning a lot of the years, but failing to to share, I hope to remedy that.

Had a heap of help from a good mate.

Long story short, I was offered this trunk in exchange for cutting some firewood. There was another tree which was quite curly as well, but dry and cracked.

So, armed with a thermos of coffee, pain killers and all the appropriate chainsaw safety gear, off I went...........5 kilometers away to a small block.

I dropped the firewood tree, with the appropriate permissions, which my mate got stuck into. I then moved to the curly trunk which had a bit of a twist , was approximately 700 wide and 2 meters tall with a fork to it.

As it was Jarrah, it is not too heavy, but I needed to slab them to load them into the trailer. Light rain persisted through the day, lovely working conditions, and does show the timber off to best effect.

This is probably the best looking Jarrah I have seen in my life, certainly the most curly .

So, what did I plan for it.
A lot was bandsawn for large fruit bowl and platters. I cut a heap of 100x100x 200 blocks to make coffee mugs (I will rough turn these over the next few days). The offcuts will become pen blanks. If there is enough interest in this thread, I will post some more piccys of the process and sealed blanks

    Hope all are well
    Sincerely
    Willy

Your preaching to the choir jarrah is one of my
Favourite Timbers. That looks fantastic what a haul!

If your looking to offload any of it small pieces or large let me know and I’m sure we could work something out

    Cheers

    Default More fresh curly Jarrah

    Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen

Well, being a greedy bastard, I couldn't help my self and had to go back to get the remaining Jarrah.

Armed once again with a good mate, pain killers for the back and the mighty 660 Stihl chainsaw, we made the journey back.

Only 3 large chunks remaining, but 2/3 a trailer load. Ripped into slabs approximately 120mm thick and transported home. Cut some firewood for old mate.

Photo 1 660 and a large chunk slabbed on the ground

    Photo 2 Trailer loaded

Photo 3 These are offcuts from bowl blanks and some slabs cut specifically for coffee mugs. These blocks are approximately 105x105x410mm. Bandsawn a little oversize to allow for shrinkage. They are then dipped in a frypan full of molten wax to seal the end grain.

Photo 4 These bowl blanks are all around the 350-400mm diameter. They are bandsawn round and the rolled into the frypan of molten wax to seal the grain. You can see the wax on some of the completed items

I will rough turn the coffee mugs, bore them out and leave a spigot on the them, dip them again in the wax to seal the end grain and then finish them in 6 months time.

The bowl blanks. As the grain is so stunning, I hope to dig out the bowl saver. It is a pain to use as I need to refresh my memory on it's use (Thank you Youtube). It is a bit hit and miss, in my opinion. It is an older version of the Kel McNaughton system.

    Please enjoy
    Sincerely
    Willy

Stop teasing us. As all I managed to scrounge lately was the below,

Default Rough turned the curly Jarrah

    Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen
I have rough turned some of the curly jarrah, looked even better when wet turned. I have hollowed out these for coffee mugs, and turned some as bowls.

Need to learn how to use the kel McNaughton bowl saver and make best use of this timber

    Regards
    Willy
