    Default So, I was in Gasweld today...

    ...And I saw one of these;
    531161 - Buy Wood Lathe Swivel Head W/Stand 1100MM Model - MACHINERY | Gasweld

    Now, granted, I know very little about lathes, but this unit seemed pretty solid, and reasonably priced. While I am on the lookout for an old Woodfast, Tough or Record, these are pretty interesting.

    Could any of the veteran turners offer an opinion on these? My local Gasweld proprietor said the price was easily lowered, so if I get the cash together, and a nice older machine doesn't surface, this is definately on my radar.

    Should any of you find yourselves in or near a gasweld, if you could pop in and have a look to give your appraisal, I'd really appreciate it!

    Cheers,
    Pete

    Hold on to your money and wait for the 2nd hand Woodfast or Tough. I wouldn't touch one of these Gasweld ones if it was given to me.

    Old Toughs keep popping up but I couldn't recommend them for lack of power and swing.

    I may be wrong, but I think Tea Lady has a Tough. Never seen one. It sounds like not a good buy.

    Okay, duly noted. Thanks.

    I was talking to an old furniture restorer on Friday, and he recommended Record, Tough, and Woodfast. He wasn't fussed on Teknatool though- I gather a lot comes down to personal preference?

    Incidentally, what's the opinion on the new Record stuff? The basic one, the DLM36SH is pretty sharply priced, and I've seen some fairly complementary reviews of it on the 'net.

    Cheers,
    Pete

    There are a lot of UK users of Record lathes (as you'd expect). Maybe post a query on the WWI turning forum: https://www.woodworkersinstitute.com...le=woodturning
