    Default Turning Green Cyprus Pine

Hi All, I just turned a bowl from a cyprus pine cut down yesterday. I think it sprayed more water and sap at me than chips. My question is: should I let it dry naturally or microwave it?
    Any thoughts? Thanks Geoff.

Either or Geoff. Microwaving just speeds up the process. If taken too quickly it could crack the wood. Cypress is a resinous timber so it will be more inclined to crack when heated.

Yes Geoff, I agree with Brendan. Green cypress will crack when taken to extremes. Microwave or dry it slowly. Golden cypress I have learned by experience is a little more forgiving but best air dried.

I have found that wrapping the green turned cypress in thick paper and putting it away for a few months is a pretty reliable method.
    If microwaving it, go gently.

Thanks for the input guys. I have plenty to practice on. A tree was cut out at a nearby park by the local maintenance crew a couple of days ago and I asked if I could collect a some pieces. They said 'sure - knock yourself out'. So I did:::::

I'd also recommend that you cut the centre out of these as soon as possible.
I.e. almost halve them but cut a slice out of the centre so that the middle of the tree is gone.
This should help to prevent or reduce radial splitting.
    Good luck with it.
    See pictures below

By all means cut the centre out of the logs but its much easier to cut if you tip the log on the side and and cut it .Not like in the picture .

He's right! Just watch for the curlies - they sometimes clog up the chain drive sprocket.
